Intra-Day Programs

Music (Instrumental): This Oakland Unified School District Music program is available
to fourth and fifth grade students and is led by teacher Claudia McCarthy.

Visual & Performing Arts Program/Science: Kindergarteners rotate through a
combination of Art, Dance and Drama classes. First through third grade students rotate
through Art, Dance, and Science throughout the year. Fourth and fifth graders rotate
through Art, Dance, Science, Video Production, and (before school) Spirit Team on a
weekly basis (see below). Classes rotate each 10-week session. Teachers collaborate
at weekly grade level meetings while students participate in the arts program.
Performances showcasing students’ achievements are scheduled throughout the year.

AROJ (African Roots of Jazz): Performing Arts Academy Consultant
“Baba Wain,” E.W. Wainwright, provides Leadership, Team Building, and
literacy/language/career exploration through Spirit Team and Video Production for fourth
and fifth graders.
Glenview Elementary School has a variety of child-centered activities and programs
that support the academic, physical, artistic, social, and emotional development of
Glenview students. Glenview School administration and its PTA work together to
provide students with these programs.
After School Programs

These are fee-for-service classes. Glenview PTA  provides scholarships for some
classes for qualifying families. The After-School Enrichment Program packet provides
information on PTA scholarships, applications, cost, and class schedules. This packet
is available from the school office.

Art with Mittie: Experienced artist Mittie Cuetara teaches drawing in a non-competitive
environment. Drawing helps develop abilities in academic areas, as well as improving
focus and concentration. Each week she presents a different topic using guided
drawings. Older children will explore cartooning, creating their own strips on topics of
their choice. Grades K - 5.

Chess: The Berkeley Chess School, a non-profit group offering chess instruction from
elementary through high school, comes to our school to teach the intricacies of chess
to our students. Studies have found that students of chess often excel in reading,
science, and math, and exhibit growth in critical cognitive abilities such as deducing,
hypothesizing, strategic thinking, logic and judgment. Beyond academia, chess
influences social behavior, including self esteem, respect for others, patience and the
old fashioned notion of good manners. Grades 1 - 5.

Recorder: Louise Carslake is a local professional musician who teaches Glenview
students to play the recorder. Students will learn to read music as well as play the
recorder in a small group class. Home practicing is encouraged. Classes are
sponsored in part by the San Francisco Early Music Society. Grades 2 - 5.

Rhythm Rocks: A musical program designed to bring out the creative rhythmic potential
of each child. Exposure to world rhythms, improvisation, body percussion, and drum
circle. Provided by Alan Miguel Hall, teacher at the Jazz school in Berkeley, to grades 1 –
5.

Oakland Youth Miracle Chorus: Students learn the following: singing songs from a
variety of cultures, vocal techniques, historical music tradition, three-part choral singing,
performance readiness, music theory, and working in teams. Miracle Choruses will
perform in OYC's Winter concert on December 2nd. Grades 1 - 5.

Music Game Class: Joe Mumm of Tree Top Piano Studio uses musical games,
puzzles and other hands-on activities to create a fun and exciting learning environment.
Students are introduced to basic music concepts such as group call and response,
rhythmic patterns, musical alphabet, note identification at keyboard and on musical
staff, and basic ear training. Grades K - 4.

Junior Scientists:  Junior Center for Art and Science instructor Jenai Driscoll leads
students in hands-on science lessons which explore plant life and the animal
kingdom. The young scientists will be introduced to members of the JCAS Animal
Ambassador Program as they learn about what makes each animal unique. During
these visits students will build scientific skills including observation, classification and
science illustration. Students will also grow plants from seeds which they will later
examine, dissect, and diagram using a special computer microscope. Grades 2 - 5.

Dance: Mama Nubia, dance instructor for close to 25 years, is offering dance classes
for the first time here at Glenview! She has studied modern, jazz, African, hip-hop, Afro-
Haitian, Cuban salsa, Polynesian dances, yoga, and funk aerobics. Children of all ages
are invited to move their bodies to music from around the world.
Academic Programs

Supplemental Education Services (SES) After School Program: This program
provides additional academic support in reading, math and homework. This program is
available to qualifying students in grades K - 5.

Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE): The GATE program provides
additional opportunities in education to children in grades 3, 4 and 5 who show
advanced talents, abilities, and achievements. Enrichment activities may be integrated
across curricular areas, offered through workshops and/or outside excursions. Most
recently, GATE students have participated in an after school science enrichment
program.

There are specific criteria for inclusion in the GATE program. Teachers review these
criteria yearly and recommend students to the program. Some students qualify
automatically based on specific test scores while others are referred by parents or
teachers for intellectual testing. Students also may be recommended to the GATE
program by their teacher or parents based on excellence in the visual or performance
arts. The GATE program committee consists of parents, teachers, and the principal.
