Glenview Gets a New Play Structure!
Glenview PTA
"Just can't hide that
Glenview pride!"
On Saturday, 9/15/07, about
50 Glenview Elementary
School parents and
students volunteered their
time to help install our
brand new, state of the art
play structure in the lower
backyard of the school.
Fundraising began just this
past spring with donations
from Glenview School
families and students.
The lower backyard playground renovation at Glenview will include replacing old, out-of-
compliance monkey bars with a Kompan play structure and three separate spinning
elements. Ari Cohen, Glenview parent and Playground Renovation Committee Chair,
stated, "We took a large group of kids on a tour of play structures in the area to learn what
kind of play structures they enjoyed the most, and this particular structure was
unanimously chosen as their favorite. The kids found it to be more challenging and
exciting than the others that they tried." The safety surfacing going in under the structure is
a new, state-of-the-art material called Pebble-Flex. The company is graciously including a
design, a sun drawn by Glenview parent, Karen Petzoldt, which will be poured right into the
surface.

On the periphery of the play structure, four concrete planter boxes and benches will be built
into which trees will be planted. There is currently no shade on the playground, so this is
long overdue.

New basketball equipment has also been purchased with the funds we have raised.
There will be five new courts (to replace the old ones) installed sometime in the next few
weeks.
Momentum quickly picked up when a generous donation from City Council President
Ignacio De La Fuente was received. Glenview has also received donations from City
Council member Henry Chang; Savemore Market in Glenview; Farmer Joe's Market;
Christian Downer, local real estate agent; and Dreyer's Ice Cream. Other contributors
include the school's PTA, Principal Deitra Atkins discretionary school funds and the
Oakland Unified School District.
Parent and community volunteers dig holes for play
structure installation.
Celebrating stage one: the holes are done!
Once all of these structures
are in place, parents are
planning to move forward
with phase 2 - designing and
putting in a new garden on
the lower yard. Stay tuned.
G
lenview PTA extends a
huge thank you to the many
donors and volunteers who
helped make this project
possible
, and to Ari Cohen,
whose dedication and hard
work helped make our
dream of a new play
structure a reality!

The end of the work day... Almost ready for phase two...
