Thoughts from the Leafcutter Ants on what they like best about
participating in Odyssey of the Mind…

“I like going to the tournaments and meeting people from all over and seeing how they solved
the problem.”
-
Gabriel McHugh

“I like that you can’t have your parents help. It kind of makes me feel like a grown-up.”
- Sara Park

“We get to have friendly competitions and travel all over. Also, working on the problem brings
the team together. Oh…and the power tools. I really like using power tools.”
- Gavin Demorest

“Odyssey of the Mind helps us express our creativity.”
- Emily Kim

“Odyssey is really hard work – but when you get to perform at the tournament, it feels good to
know that all your hard work paid off.”
- Cameron Hub

"I think Odyssey of the Mind is cool because you get a problem with specific rules and it uses a
lot of brainwork and teamwork to figure it out.”
- Lucy Allen

“I like the tournaments – getting to do a ‘real’ performance, the pins, the awards ceremony, and
all the surprises.”
- Terrence Perrier
Thoughts from a coach….

As mentioned earlier, it has been a long road to the World Finals – the team has put in
hundreds of hours over the last 5+ months. And as with every journey, there have been
moments of complete awe…and moments of pure frustration! Who knew that a group of seven
3rd and 4th graders could be so amazingly creative – and fixated on one idea to the exclusion
of all others – all at the same time? (Yes…we love the idea of making the vehicle look like an
ant, but can we get back to brainstorming ways to actually build the vehicle?) Odyssey of the
Mind has definitely been a learning experience for the coaches as well as the team members.
We are forbidden from offering ideas and suggestions, so our role is really to keep the team
focused and moving forward. And we are learning. We are learning that the team moves at its
own pace. There are some days when you look at what the team has accomplished and are
just stunned. There are others when it takes seven kids almost two hours to install eight
screws…and that has to be okay. In the end, Odyssey of the Mind is an amazing experience
that allows the team members to create something that is completely their own. It teaches
them creativity, teamwork, and problem solving. When I look at the theme, and the props, and
the presentation that our team came up with, I recognize that it is more than any one team
member (or coach, if we were allowed to help) could have done on his or her own. And I feel
honored to be part of it...if only from the sidelines.
