Health and Wellness

What we do

The Health and Wellness Committee was formed in the summer of 2006 for the
purpose of enhancing the health and well-being of students at Glenview. We will be
further defining our mission statement this fall as we encourage new members to join
us. Possible goals for the committee that have surfaced in our initial discussions
include:

Gaining an understanding of the current status of Physical Education (PE) at
Glenview and how the committee can best support teachers providing PE.
Making contact with appropriate Oakland Unified School District (OUSD)
personnel to better understand and support implementation of the new
California state standards for PE.
Working with the Playground/Garden Committee on the viability of partnering
with Project Fit America - a national non-profit that implements fully-funded
cardiovascular health and lifetime fitness equipment and education programs
for schools grades K - 12.
Integrating community supported agriculture into the school environment by
organizing enough families who want to receive weekly boxes of organic
produce to become a neighborhood distribution site for Full Belly Farms and
organizing a fieldtrip to the farm.
Encouraging a culture of increased physical activity, outdoor time and better
nutrition within the school community by providing resources that can be used
for both the home and school environments.
Sponsoring a PTA event focused on some aspect of health and wellness as
well as providing ideas for integration of increased physical activity or nutrition
into other PTA events.

The Family-School
Partnership Act
(Assembly Bill 2590)
allows employees to
use: “vacation,
personal leave, comp
time or time without pay
to participate in their
children’s school-
related activities. The
law covers employers
with 25 or more
workers at the same
location, and it applies
to parents,
grandparents and
guardians. These
persons are allowed to
use up to 40 hours a
school year to conduct
school-related
business. However,
employers may request
verification of the nature
of the school activity.”
