Mission Accomplished! Here’s what we did during the 2008-09 school year:

1. Supported students and teachers through the enrichment of academics:
  • Organized Language Arts and Literacy enrichment activities:
  • Held 4th annual Glenview Spelling Bee
  • Held 2 Scholastic Book Fairs, including “One for One” donations
    campaign purchasing books for school’s library and Family
    Reading Night guest authors
  • Produced Read-a-thon Day, The Glenview Giving Tree -
    Celebration of Literacy, involving guest readers from the community
  • Offered Reading is Fundamental (RIF) free-choice books to all
    students
  • Individual parent and community volunteers help in McPherson
    Library
  • Librarian, Ms. Littleford awarded $1500 Altamont Landfill
    Settlement grant to purchase library books about waste reduction
    and other greening and ecology topics
  • Organized Science, Ecology and Gardening enrichment activities:
  • Held K-5 Science Fair and Family Science Day
  • Hosted visiting engineers to classrooms, for National Engineers
    Week
  • Learned about local watershed ecology by hosting a PTA general
    meeting with Karen Paulsell of Friends of Sausal Creek.
  • Inspired students with Think Green Day, a day of celebration and
    learning about the earth. This year expanded to include a Family
    Green Resource Fair after school.
  • Awarded $500 Philanthropic Ventures field trip grant for 5th grade
    visit to Deer Hill Ranch to study food production
  • Awarded $1000 SD Bechtel, Jr Foundation grant for Mr.
    Swinderman to purchase microscopes for his classroom
  • Awarded two new grants to enhance instructional gardening on
    site  (EBMUD WaterSmart Demonstration Garden of front yard
    natives and water conservation, $1500) and (PG&E Bright Ideas
    grant awarded to Ms. S. Morgan to install cistern for watering
    garden in rear yard, $5000).
  • 5th grade students do service learning project to plant natives on
    Hampel Avenue side of front yard, as part of EBMUD grant activities  

  • Teachers, students, parents and community participated in
    implementing prior grants from State Education Department
    ($2500) and East Bay Community Foundation ($10,000) to build
    and implement lower rear yard instructional garden, and to begin
    intraday gardening instruction.
  • Organized Arts and Creativity enrichment activities:
  • Organized and supported three Primary and four Intermediate
    Odyssey of the Mind teams, grades K-5 to compete in regional
    tournament of creativity
  • Hosted 3rd annual Ezra Ben Cohen Performing Arts Assembly
  • Coordinated two sessions of after-school enrichment classes and
    provided student scholarships for these classes
  • Other support provided by PTA:
  • Coordinated refurbishing, installation and troubleshooting for
    iMacs in classrooms
  • Provided field trip funding, grade level supplies, and teacher
    classroom supplies reimbursement by request

2. Promoted a safe, healthy and ecological learning environment:
  • Helped pay for Social-emotional counselor
  • Helped pay for Recess Supervisor
  • Organized Soul Shoppe Assembly teaching students how to stand up to
    bullying
  • Ribbon cutting ceremony for lower yard play structure and shade benches
    installed in the 2007-09 years by OUSD and PTA.
  • Glenview Green Team continued implementation of recycling and
    composting of lunch waste, along with Mr. Fudge, Custodian and 5th
    grade student monitors; cost savings now documented.
  • Fundraised through selling Ecometro guides supporting local East Bay
    sustainable businesses. Glenview had the highest school based sales of
    any East Bay school and proudly partnered with the Grandlake Farmers
    Market and local small businesses.
  • Took leadership in founding Oakland Food Web for OUSD Schools to
    initiate a wide variety of healthy food and nutrition activities, including salad
    bars, farm stands and edibles gardening
  • Awarded Altamont Landfill Settlement funds to promote future Farm Stand
    ($3000), to create Lawrence Hall of Science partnership for Learning
    Without Limits students about recycling and composting ($3000), and to
    have recycling education as part of Oakland Fine Arts Summer School
    ($3000)

3. Welcomed, respected, and engaged all families in the school community:

    Workshop

  • Family Green Resource Fair
  • Soul Shoppe Assembly with anti-bullying information
  • Two Family Game Nights
  • Glenview Restaurant Fundraisers at Ming Teh and Red Boy Pizza
  • Parenting with Positive Discipline Workshop
  • Teacher Appreciation Brunch
  • PTA Movie Night
  • Multicultural Potluck/Planning Meeting
  • Instrumental Music Program
  • Translated PTA event flyers into Spanish and Chinese
  • Provided childcare for all PTA meetings
  • Produced The Griffin, a periodic Parent-Teacher Newsletter

Glenview Elementary School nestles against
